This story is really well made. By creating characters that are like ones truly in history, but aren't, the problems with breaking history are bypassed. Also, combining several wartime tropes in bizarre ways allows for a defamiliarization of war stories.
I really loved this story. Mad Jack is one of my favorite historical figures, and it was really cool to be able to read about him in a way that wasn't extremely academic sounding. I also loved the ending, where the interviewer thinks all of these stories are fake. It does a really good job at highlighting how while some things that we see as historical could actually be fictitious, other things that we might see as fictitious are actually historical facts. Amazing job here!
